When I right-click a style in the nav pane, I can add a 'New Heading Before' and 'New Heading Afer' - these are formatted properly. These headings appear in the Navigation Pane and I can jump around the document and rearrange the headings within the pane. For each style, an outline level has been applied.
I have created my own styles, using my own names. I'm trying to confirm that the Navigation Pane in Word 2010 allows Promote/Demote only
